Hardware

All our applications work smoothly with any hardware, if the hardware has proper drivers.

Audio Interfaces can be classified according to several criteria. Please consider these notes when searching for the audio interface which would perfectly fit your needs.

Number of channels:

The first thing to decide is the number and type of instruments and microphones you will connect. All our software not only supports multichannel interfaces, it gives you many additional advantages using multiple channels. For instance, the multichannel output can be used for monitoring, for individual outputs of software instruments etc.

Type of the input connectors:

Generally, we suggest to use only hardware with professional connectors - no mini jacks. XLR connectors for microphones, 1/4" jack for guitar, 1/4" jack, XLR or cinch for line.
  • Electric guitar requires so called Instrument or HiZ input. Use the interfaces equipped with such an input to preserve audio quality (especially high frequencies) of guitar sound.
  • Keyboards can be connected via USB or using standard MIDI cable plugged to proper MIDI interface.
  • Microphones: Use interfaces with XLR balanced inputs. Most of the interfaces with mic inputs provide phantom power required by the condenser microphones.

Connection to the computer:

Audio interfaces are connected by USB, FireWire or PCI.
  • USB is the cheapest and most affordable connection. However, it has a lot of limitation in number of channels and it also requires some "attention" of computer CPU, so the performance of USB devices is less reliable when computer is heavily loaded.
  • FireWire is an interface designed for streaming of audio. It has many additional advantages, so we suggest FireWire for professional external interfaces.
Notes:

USB and FireWire devices can operate powered from the bus, without any power adaptor. Apple laptops use full size FireWire connectors allowing power supplying, the small 4-pin connectors mounted to most of PC laptops cannot supply audio interfaces.

FireWire 400 has generally better performance than USB 2, even if the nominal bit rate is smaller.

Manufacturers:

We don't endorse any particular hardware. We can guarantee that our software works with any hardware with a proper driver.
However, all our products are tested with the complete product line of M-Audio keyboards and audio interfaces, so we know their hardware and we can provide support easily.
